Jim Baxter NTAF Mid-Atlantic Traumatic Brain Injury Fund In addition to being a talented musician, dedicated husband and father, Jim Baxter was also a self-employed carpenter. He was the first person to help out a friend in need with his skills in home repair or in any other way. It was three years ago, during a job repairing a window, when Jimmy had a dreadful fall. Medical reports indicate that Jim, who is a diabetic, had a rapid drop in blood sugar. He lost consciousness while he was two stories-high on a ladder. The traumatic brain injury that resulted has been devastating. Every day brings new hope for Jimmy and his family. In the beginning, we were not even sure if he would survive. He was in a coma and on life support. Now, Jim continues to make progress but it is very slow. He is able to eat without a feeding tube, breathe on his own and communicate to some degree with hand signals. He is still unable to speak and take care of his general needs. In time, and with the help of generous people and continued therapy, there is plenty of real hope that Jim will walk and talk and resume a more normal life. Devoted. Compassionate. Committed. These words describe Jim’s wife, Stefanie, and his mother, Dora. Jim has been in and out of the hospital many times but now spends every day at home in the care of his mother and wife. This kind of care is incredibly difficult and includes moving him and attending to his every need. With financial support, his family could afford the resources that will help Jimmy progress faster. Therapies and assistive devices that will help him communicate and perhaps walk again—technology his insurance does not fully cover. Jimmy’s daughter, Gigi, is now 9 years old. She has had to accept the fact that her Daddy cannot speak or walk anymore. Gigi helps her mom take care of him, but deep down she wants the daddy back that would run and play with her. Most of all she misses Daddy’s hugs and kisses. Still she celebrates every small improvement she sees and longs for the day when he can tell her he loves her and once again walk with her hand in hand. WHY NTAF Jimmy's family has not asked for financial help for medical expenses over the past two years. They realize now how much Jim needs your help.
