Family and friends of Wanda Baum are raising money to pay for uninsured medical expenses associated with her stem cell transplant.
A few years ago, Wanda found herself with several health issues. She became unbearably tired and she began to walk with a limp. She felt like she could never get enough rest and could barely get through her day.
Eventually, we were informed of her diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis! After both of us got over the shock, we began researching the disease and possible treatments. We discovered that it is a degenerative neurological disorder that science is not able to cure at this time nor is there a timeline for its progression. Some MS patients are wheelchair-bound, some get around using canes, and some lose their eyesight.
We recently found a study where scientists overseas are using umbilical cord stem cells for treatment of several disorders, including MS. This treatment shows a lot of promise. She can’t help but want to participate. In my mind, there is nothing controversial about this treatment; umbilical cords are usually just treated as medical waste and discarded. And those cells could potentially help someone like her! She has spoken with MS patients who have returned from treatments overseas and they are seeing real improvements.
We are currently making some tough financial decisions, looking closely at how we can tighten our belts. We have drained our savings and unfortunately, this kind of experimental treatment is not covered by insurance.
I am also asking for your help. We need to raise $40,000 for the eight stem cell treatments, and our travel and lodging expenses. In order to help fund the cost of this treatment, a fundraising campaign has been established in her honor with the National Transplant Assistance Fund (NTAF). NTAF is a non-profit organization that has been assisting the transplant community with fundraising for over 25 years.
